habits, contributing factors to Asthma
According to WHO around 235 million people currently suffer from
asthma. The number is increasing in urban and affluent population, because of
unhealthy lifestyle, changing food habits, increased pollution levels and lower immunity levels. There has been a rapid increase
in the consumption of packaged food and fast foods responsible for increased
obesity rate and sensitivity to the preservatives and chemicals used. A balanced and nutritious diet along with
healthy lifestyle can play a major role in the prevention of asthma symptoms.
On account of World Asthma Day, Mr.
Sachin Singh, Clinical Director, Diet Mantra tells about the dietary intake
for its prevention:

Monitor your weight: Obesity multiplies
the suffering of asthma patients. Eat
to maintain a healthy weight. Even losing 10% of your body weight can
improve your symptoms.

Eat a healthy and a balanced diet: A
healthy, nutritious diet rich in essential nutrients increases immunity levels
which if maintained right from the childhood can help prevent asthma in
children.

Consume plenty of fresh fruits and
vegetables: They're a
good source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds such as beta
carotene and vitamins C and E, which may help reduce lung swelling, neutralize
harmful free radicals and thus protect cells from damage.

Avoid allergic foods: The allergic foods can differ from person
to person depending upon individual sensitivity. Sulphites can trigger asthma
symptoms in some people. It is used as a preservative found in wine, dried
fruits, pickles, fresh and frozen shrimp and some other foods.
·
Avoid canned, preserved and processed
foods: The chemicals
present in these foods can trigger asthma symptoms.

Include omega 3 rich foods in your diet: Like olive oil, fish- salmon, tuna, and
halibut and nut oils.
·
Drink a lot of water to keep respiratory tract
secretions more fluid.
·
Reducing sodium in the diet has been found to be
beneficial in reducing asthma symptoms.
