RG Stone treated 222 grams of Enlarged Prostate through HOLEP successfully

Kolkata: From unusual disorders to major operations, India’s leading RG Stone Urology and Laparoscopy Hospital has made another stand by treating a patient suffering from enlarged prostate gland of 222 grams (Largest in eastern India till date). Highly experienced faculty of RG Stone Urology and Laparoscopic Hospital, Kolkata successfully operated 68 yr old Mr.  Gouranga Sundar Patra, resident of Kolkata.  The most remarkable thing is the complete surgery had been done by using world’s latest technology 100 watt HOLEP. 

Speaking to media Dr. Amitava Mukherjee, Consultant Urologist, RG Stone Urology and Laparoscopic Hospital Kolkata said, “Mr.  Gouranga Sundar Patra was having urinary problems due to which he was having difficulty in passing urine. He was advised to go for open surgery elsewhere, but the patient was not ready for that. His urine was blocked and he was using Catheter Foley. He had prostate of 210 gram. For the surgery, we used 100 watt HOLEP machine. It is the best technique across the globe. On re-examining Mr. Patra after 2 months surgery his prostate is now only 13 grams and is doing well.” 

Dr. Amitava Mukherjee added, “Prostrate is a walnut sized gland located just beneath the urinary bladder, in front of the rectum, surrounding the urethra. Found only in men, prostate adds a liquid medium that the sperm cells need for nourishment which carries the sperms during ejaculation.  The size of the prostate gland increases slowly with age. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). But, it may grow too large causing problems. This condition is very common in elderly males over 50 years of age. The increased size of prostate squeezes the urethra causing difficult and painful urination. In severe cases urination may even become impossible, which is an emergency requiring immediate attention.”

Dr. Dr.Prabir Basu.MS, DNB of RG Stone Urology and Laparoscopy Hospital, Kolkata added, “HoLEP has been proposed to be a new “Gold Standard” in surgical therapy of benign prostatic enlargement (BPH). This is by virtue of not only its safety and efficacy profiles but also due to its proven durability over long term. HoLEP has all the advantages with none of the complications of open prostatectomy. It can be safely done in patients on anticoagulants and those with compromised cardiac status. It does not require any blood transfusions and has fewer complications than TURP. The biggest advantage is the completeness of enucleation. Post operative urodynamic studies reveal superior results when compared to TURP.’’
